Engagement and Pre-Arranged Weddings
On Boxer Day, 26 December we had an engagement party for Nita’s Uncle’s Daughter, Rolu. It was a fun affair with a band (loud) and food for everybody involved. The boy is from Noakhali. What makes this so special to you is this was the first time they had ever met. This is an arranged marriage by the parents. The engagement party was the first time the girl and groom-to-be met. After the initial ceremonies and business of negotiations over saris, gold and TV set were over the girl and boy sat beside each other for the first time for snacks. Rolu is 20 years old and the boy is 30 years old. I was amazed as they sat there talking and giggling. I was thinking of my two nephews, both have engagement and marriage in the near future. They know their betroth so well already- they both have been dating the same girls for 4 and 3 years respectively- they have spoke thousands of words to each other- in person, over the phone, over the internet. But here was a guy and gal meeting for the first time and will be married in one month. It was blessed!
I’m a firm believer that arranged marriages and love marriages (that’s what we have in the west) have the same success rate. After eating snacks, the groom and bride-to-be went to the church to sign some official documents cementing the engagement and setting the wedding date. Nita went along and was a witness to everything; and even had to sign her name.
Different cultures- different practices. Makes you think.

Wow-I am not sure where to even begin addressing this issue, except to say that I think your brains have been baking in that hot tropical sun for too long now! Can you even imagine the awkwardness of meeting the person that others have selected for you to spend the rest of your life with? Using empathy, what must it feel like to look at a person for the first time, and realize how stuck you are-especially if that person is smelly, or bony, or mean, or devoid of feeling, or racist, or can’t stand you…
The reason you think these two divergent forms of marriage have the same success rate is two-fold. 1. How accessible is a divorce for someone in this pre-arranged situation and even if they can get a divorce, what are their prospects after divorce, especially for the woman (Your sister-in-law for instance)? 2. Westerners do not take their Love commitments seriously enough. This is a serious issue that is destroying the sanctity of marriage, but I think if we did not count all the marriages that should have never happened in the first place, our divorce rate would be much less than the 50% that it currently is. But this personal choice is something that has been a long evolution in Western society (prearranged marriages in western societies are not that long gone) and has it upside in many other ways. And really, what do you consider a successful marriage? One that is simply based on longevity? Is a marriage successful if a couple is together for 30-60 years but don't like or respect each other? Are we really reaching our full potential as humans and as Christians if we live in this sort of non-enriching relationship?
I know it sounds sappy, but I believe in the power of Love. Jesus preached Love, not convenience when he addressed, well, pretty much everything. And while it is possible that Love may eventually grow out of an arranged marriage, that is not a chance I would like someone to take with my life! What are the chances that if my marriage was arranged, I would have been paired up with my soul mate from Tennessee instead of some annoying woman from NY which is where my family is from?
We are also trying to compare two different cultures, which is incredibly difficult. Individualism and the ideas of personal happiness are central tenets to life in the west, and so it makes it very difficult for us to understand the ideas presented in arranged marriages. But as for me, I will continue to put faith in Love, and not human tinkering. But anyway Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
