Olympics 2008

The Olympics and the athletes are amazing. But as I look out my window here in Bangladesh and see poverty grinding into little kids playing in the dirt- I wonder if the athletes wonder/know how good they have it? They should Praise the Lord for the opportunity they have. They are an elite few but worked very hard to get there.

  • Yes, the olympics are great. But I look at all the money spent on it, and then look at all the poverty around the world, and wonder - is this how God would want us to spend our money? No. Jesus said to feed the poor and hungry and to clothe those who have no clothes.

  • I wonder what the original purpose of the Olympic games was, way back when they began in Greece. Were these games part of Greek relegious activity?

At the 2008 closing ceremony, I heard the remark "...May the spirit of the Olympics live on..."

What is this "spirit of the Olympics" We can usually tell a spirit by its fruit. What fruit did we observe? I, like J. Thornhill, saw a lot of spent money, and a lot of worship of the athletes. Some of the atheletes, like Phelps (sp) were lifted up and praised (like gods); and a lot of boasting (on the athletes parts).

I personally, pushed myself on some nights to stay up and watch the events. DO I ever push myself and deny myself sleep to participate in some activity for God?

    Hmm. The Olympics.
